My sweet boy, Checkers, passed away yesterday morning. He went in for a neuter and passed away under the anesthesia. The vet said his heart rate went straight from 160 to 0. They reversed the drugs they had administered and did CPR for 45 minutes. They got his heart rate back several times but it never remained/stabilized and after 45 minutes they called it. She said in the 5 years she’s worked with rabbits he’s only her second loss. I was, and still am, completely devastated. My husband is also devastated. I think we are grieving differently though. He doesn’t want to put up Checker’s things yet but I can’t stand looking at them without him here. We had been talking to a rescue about getting another rabbit before checkers passed away so that he would have a friend. They have been very understanding and sympathetic about everything but I feel like my boy would want me to open my heart and help another rabbit in need of a home. My husband and I talked and came to agree that we will bring home a pair in about a week. It feels bittersweet to bring home another rabbit since originally it was going to be a friend for Checkers.
