Black and white watercolors: To use or Not to use?
![]() | For the longest time, I've felt conflicted about using black in my watercolor artworks. It's one of those things that you frequently hear watercolor masters say, "throw out that black color the minute you unbox your watercolor sets," and the like. But I recently have found that incorporating black (not alone, but rather I mix it with other colors to give it a non-neutral hue) helps me build dramatic contrast. I love that contrast when I see it in artworks. See for instance this painting I made today where I used black, and I recorded my process for YT. But the idea that one shouldn't use black (or white for that matter) is so deeply ingrained in my mind that I feel like I'm no longer a "watercolor purist." I would love to hear from all of you how you feel about this topic? [link] [comments] |
