Painting directly with the brush without a pencil drawing underneath

As a planner, painting without a pencil drawing is a struggle- the lines are fat, wobbly, less controlled, no composition, and no eraser to undo ‘mistakes’. But I’m trying to work on the more spontaneous side of painting that’s less concerned with the final result, and more focused on enjoying the process of painting.

Painted this collection of hats for day 6 of World Watercolour Month with no plan and I’m just a little proud of it. Or rather of allowing myself out of my comfort zone.

Anyone else here that struggles without a proper plan? How do you beat it? Any advice?
