John Singer Sargent, El Jaleo (detail), 1882 [3024 x 4032]
My photo depicts a detail of the dancer in John Singer Sargent theatrical painting titled "El Jaleo." This painting is on display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Almost 12 feet wide, the monumental-sized painting occupies the entire wall of a dedicated cove at the museum. The lighting in the cove mimics the dramatic lighting in the painting, creating an engrossing sense that museum visitors are a part of the painting's scene. I especially love Sargent's talented depiction of the shadows on the dancer's leg arm (on the right in the painting) and white dress. I think the dancer’s diagonal lean, mimicked by the larger shadow behind her, add drama to the painting. [link] [comments] |
