Here's the review of the samson sr850 and some of the adjustment I mad…

Here

It's great('nt). The value they bring for 23 dollar is insane. They have great soundstage, relatively good tuning(not really), and it's a semi open back with velour pad at the price of 23 dollar. It's absolutely worth 'that' price and maybe more but then I'm not gonna buy it because I'm a cheapskate. That is until I start to run into some problem. Here's the list:

  1. The clamping force is kinda too much, although it could be easily fixed by bending the rod.

    1. The velour pad were shallow and my ear touch the driver. It's also hot and i can't wear it longer than 1 hour
  2. The tuning. Here's some of my complaint about them:

The Bass

The subbass region is kinda lacking, the bass is fine, not really that fast tho so it kinda overpowering the mid a little bit

The Mid

There is a dip in the mid around 500hz region. Aside that not really much to complaint about aside the 1-2khz dip but I prefer it that way.

The Treble

This the part I don't like about this headphone, it's peaky. Sibilant is very prominent, and it sound like low resolution. There is peak at 5,6khz and 8khz when I do tone sweep. There is also dip at 4-5khz which made the 5,6khz peak more painful. Overall I don't like it.

  1. There is very little discussion about this headphone, like why? It's fairly popular and other similar looking headphone like superlux had many more mod discussion than this.

But all of these is actually an easy fix. Just eq them and put some deeper pad to these and they improved alot.

But I really want to see how many tuning deficiency I could fix without eq, so here is some mod I do to this headphone:

  1. Putting 3 layer of thin paper tissue

It decreased the treble above 6khz a bit. It's sound more pleasant to my ear. But also lose some treble extension so it is kind of a downgrade compared to just eq it.

  1. Change to leather pad

It definitely increased the bass a bit, a bit too much even but it sound a bit more pleasant. Except that the treble is now have more peaks and dips. Well at least it's more comfortable amirite? Not really. The headphone itself doesn't circulate air well enough (even though it's semi open back) so it still hot. Atleast the ear doesn't touch driver anymore yee.

  1. Taking the paper damping on the back of the phone

It decrease bass but it's sound I don't know, tighter per se but I can't really confirm it, what I could confirm is that the treble peak also affected being that it become even more prominent for treble spark. Well the perceived soundstage is improved so I'd say fair trade.

  1. Putting sock over the earpad

What a weird mod, who in the right mind would do that?..... Anyway, it felt more comfortable I would say, and probably cooler than before, but the temperature increased when you wear it long enough. As for the sound, it sound more open, but it's just uppermid and treble. Everything below it just weaker.

  1. Putting holed thick woolfelt over the driver

The midbass and mid is stronger.

  1. Just wear it without the earpad.

I'm curious. Also the treble peak is gone? What? The fix is just like that? Nah it has other problem, there is just uppermid and treble. The bass is completely gone. But holy paper the treble peak is gone I can't believe it. And then when I put it farther to my ear that treble peak is back... Why though? could someone explain this to me?

And that's it. That's all the mod I did. Currently I do the combination of 1,2,4,5 and eq-d that 5,6khz peak down (and add subbass I suppose). Now I'm kinda regretting the choices I made buying these instead of just buying superlux hd681.
