Pastry chef with an odd one for ya…

Sharing a bottle of Pinot noir with my husband tonight, he grabbed dessert from my cookie jar - currently stocked with earl grey/orange zest/cardamom cookies - and almost puked when he took a bite with a sip of wine.

This must be the anti-pairing to end all pairings. The wine and the cookies taste delightful separately… but in combination, my mouth is filled with the taste of metal or blood. It is truly bizarre. What’s the culprit? Google was little help. I suspect the orange zest - the horrible flavor is vaguely acidic.
