1978 Valentino Barolo Riserva
| Decided to pop this last night. Took a gamble on this bottle a few months back. I think I picked it up for $80. Fill was high shoulder. Cork was fragile, but uncompromised. Had a couple of small glasses with some homemade lasagna. It was really solid. Color was a perfect red amber. Tobacco, black pepper, dark fruit, and tar on the palate. Well-balanced with a lengthy finish. Pleasant acidity. Pulled the original cork and re-corked with new, so I could use my Coravin. That's usually my move on these older bottles. Now I can finish the bottle over the next few weeks, with a small glass here and there. As an aside, I've noticed wines, while protected from ruin, do continue to evolve after tapping with the Coravin. So, I expect it will continue to improve over the coming days.
