2022 Bougrier Vouvray V Classique | A lovely $15 Chenin Blanc, bless t…
My weekday whites rotation currently consists of Bordeaux Blanc and Vouvray, and having tried other, pricier examples from Famille Bougrier, grabbed their entry level Vouvray to try. I've recently enjoyed a Domaine Huet Le Mont, so I knew I had a good reference point for comparison's sake. God bless Chenin Blanc and the Loire, honestly, glad they have such a fantastic QPR and remain little known in some circles (not my circle thanks to me). Anyway - stored at 45°, popped and poured. Visually, a muted golden color. On the nose, floral scents of honeysuckle at the rim - marzipan! Sweet and borderline nutty. Further into the glass, limes and apples - faint nuttiness lingers. I live for these scents. There's a hint of a sweet pastry at the back end. On the palate, lightly bodied and easy drinking - the most notable component here is the sweetness - definitely a demi-sec, the producers themselves call it "medium dry". Paired with a decent bit acidity, this makes the wine quite refreshing when cold! Flavors primarily of orchard fruits - having never tasted quince, I can only say fresh apples and pears! Honey and more citrus alongside it. The finish is lengthy - twenty seconds at least! No noticeable burn at 11.5% - I'm about to finish half this bottle. The sweetness might deter some, but I continue to be impressed at the versatility of Chenin Blanc. Between Vouvray, Cremant, Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume, I've yet to have anything made from Chenin Blanc that lets me down - but I will admit to having a bit of a sweet tooth! I want to try this with some spicy food next. Recommended at the price point easily, break some out at your next outdoor gathering served cold! [link] [comments] |
