Time for some Arpepe!

Time for some Arpepe!

After tasting many white wines in the Südsteiermark, I needed a great red to end the day! After having enjoyed their entry level Valtellina, it was a given for me to try their other wines. This wine comes from the Sassella subzone of the Valtellina region that lies east of Sondrio.

Aerated for about 2 hours and served in a Spiegelau Definition Burgundy glass. Pale ruby colour and garnet rim.

Nose: The wine starts with notes of pomegranate, raspberry and rose bud. Soon after, alpine herbs, roses, moss, tar and truffles appear. Savoury touches of soy sauce, crushed stones and five spice powder come to mind on the way out.

Palate: Raspberry, forest berries and pomegranate at first, soy sauce and five spice make themselves know a bit later. Very fresh acidity, noticeable salinity and medium tannins. On the finish, the wine shows crushed stones, moss, floral notes and more soy sauce.

This wine takes what I loved about their normal Valtellina Rosso and brings it to a new level. The nose takes a few swirls to unravel, but then it shows great complexity and depth of flavour. The acidity and slight salinity give the wine a remarkable freshness on the palate. Valtellina Nebbiolos absolutely rock!
