Monthly blind wine
| Regular blind night. The ‘90 Vaucrains unfortunately was the kind of ‘90 that was still good, but would have been best much younger. Excellent ‘89 DDC (with multiple reports of even better bottles out there) and even better ‘89 La Lagune, they made great wines in the 70s and 80s. We all thought Bordeaux but were lost on both the era and commune. I thought the La Lagune might have been Lynch Bages from the big structure and lots of black fruit. My ‘70 von Schonlemer Bernkasteler Doktor Feinste Auslese was very good and surprisingly seemed to get younger and more precise a couple of hours in. Other than not guessing the exact wine no one had much trouble getting pretty close; it was textbook old Mosel riesling. Finally, the ‘01 CM Cras from @domainegeorgesroumier was unbelievably good, although at first we thought it was a top northern Rhone wine, maybe even a Chave Hermitage. Once we learned it was Burgundy we thought it might be a good Vosne grand cru from '96 or '99; I said maybe '01 even though our group generally has been down on how that vintage has developed. Great wine. As an extra for dessert our host opened 2015 Muller-Catoir Haardter Herzog Rieslaner Auslese. It was great and it's really good to see they're still making excellent wine in the post-Hans-Gunther era. [link] [comments] |
