Burgs and... bords?

Burgs and... bords?

Since you guys like fast food and fancy wine, here's my submission: 1982 Château Margaux with a McDonald's Happy Meal.

This ’82 Margaux was decanted for 4 hours, poured back into the bottle, and left open for about 2 additional hours prior to service. It was served blind to a tasting group of 8. The theme for the blind tasting was Bordeaux 2005 or older. This was clearly left-bank Bordeaux, but most guesses were 2000 - which was interesting but not surprising. Two people did guess ’82, and one person '05 - all of which is to say: the wine was showing spectacularly well.

On the nose, the fruit was still very much alive (leading to some of the younger-vintage guesses) showing mostly muddled blackberry notes with some brighter red fruit, a few hints of cedar and leather, and classic Margaux “poopy florals” peeking through. Just endless complexity - really special.

The color was a gorgeous young ruby starting to show some transparency, and we argued over whether there was any bricking. I felt there were slight hints, but the wine had beautiful clarity - very clean, no fine sediment or muddiness.

The palate was where this thing was lights out. Gorgeous fruit, mid-weight, silky-smooth tannins that made their presence known but weren’t in the least bit abrasive. The wine was bright, but the acid didn’t really make itself known, and the finish was elegant and seemingly endless.

While guesses were mostly St-Julien and Pauillac, one person did call Margaux. I'd attribute this to how youthful it was showing.

This bottle has years and years of life ahead of it. A truly spectacular effort.

The Happy Meal was a joke by our host for the evening, but I didn’t pass up the chance to take a bite of a cold McDonald’s cheeseburger finished with an ’82 Margaux.

3/10 pairing. Would not recommend.
