Last month I hosted a pop-up wine bar in Paris. One evening around 21hr two guys walk in and pull out the 1987 Vosne-Romane and put it on the table. The bottle was empty, but some of us in the room were in awe — it’s a 15,000 EUR bottle of wine. After some discussion, one of the guys goes out to his car and brings back the 1990 Lynch Bages and the 1996 Pape Clement. Corks are removed, he asked for a Durand, which we had, and he starts pouring. No idea who they are…Thoughts? Are they just a modern day wine Santa Claus. I have my own thoughts, but what do you think is going on here? PS: The red label bottle on the far right is delicious Pinot Noir from Weingut Feldtheorie, which we were pouring at the pop-up.
