A 1998 Selbach Auslese: Past its prime

1998 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rieslings Auslese** 375ml. Received it as a gift back in 2019.

Drank over couple of hours.

One of my go-to producers in the Mosel. It had that lithe clarity of flavours I've come to experience with this producer, but this was definitely past its peak.

Honeysuckle, white flowers, dried orange peel, Hawthorne fruit candy, touch of toffee with a clean Chinese white tea (白茶) finish. Sounds complex, but it simply lacked the concentration and depth I had expected.

With some research, 1998 was a spotty vintage. Heatwave summers and a wet harvest; not surprising.

It was an 'alright' aged Auslese but a good learning experience nonetheless.
