Found 3 abandoned roosters near Hempstead Lake, NY — public safety said help was coming but no one showed. What can I do?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction.

Earlier today I found 3 roosters abandoned on the side of the road near Hempstead Lake State Park in Nassau County, Long Island. They’ve been there all day with no food, water, or shelter. I called Public Safety, and they told me they had contacted someone to come get them — but no one ever showed. They told me I had to leave because “I could get hit” and that they had a whole park to take care of that was more important.

I went back later because I couldn’t stop thinking about them, and when I tried to check on them again, public safety pulled up behind my car and threatened to call the cops if I stayed. I wasn’t doing anything wrong — I just didn’t want to leave these animals to suffer or die on the side of the road.

I want to take the roosters into my backyard temporarily until I can find a rescue or sanctuary to take them, but I don’t know how to safely get around public safety being on my case. They seem more concerned with keeping people away than actually helping these animals.

I also don’t currently have a coop — the earliest one I can order would arrive Wednesday. Does anyone know: • What I can safely house them in for a few days? • How to deal with public safety or legally get the roosters out of there? • Any local sanctuaries or rescues on Long Island that take roosters?

I’m willing to drive them somewhere safe if needed. I just need some help figuring out what’s legal, what’s safe, and what’s best for them.

Thank you so much for any advice or support.
