I found this on my new property and I’m having trouble understanding what it is(pretty sure it’s an old well/spring). But there’s things I’m questioning about it.

Why would they remove whatever structure was on it?(I assume it was just old and decrepit) but would there be any other reasons?

Why would the pipe be cemented the whole way through it?

It goes down much further than what is pictured, there’s some kind of “cover” that the leaves are collecting on. Would it be worth uncovering it all the way and seeing what’s down there?

Currently it’s completely filled with crystal clear water. This picture is from a while ago.
