JR East has announced plans for a new steam locomotive train.

The plan is to use the C58 239 locomotive, originally used on the SL Ginga, which was retired in 2023 due to its aging passenger cars, to operate between Morioka and Ichinoseki on the Tohoku Main Line. The plan only calls for the use of modified carriages. JR East hopes to attract inbound tourists to Tohoku, who are currently concentrated in Tokyo and Kyoto, and is also considering revitalizing tourist destinations in the region, such as Hiraizumi, a World Heritage Site.JR aims to start operations after spring 2029. https://www.tetsudo.com/news/3852/
