bottom up hats >>>>> top down hats

I'm making a top down hat for the first time and it's a 0/10 experience; I have no idea if it will fit. Even though I did a gauge swatch like three times in paranoia.

Tips, commiseration? Thanks in advance!

(it's hopefully going to be a tardis hat, but who knows if it will actually be hat-sized!!)
