10th BG Massive Strike on Italian Fortress
| Operation Spearhead is a precision bombing strike targeting an Italian command bunker deep inside Naples. With Sicily secured and Malta now firmly in Allied control, the mission pushes bombing operations further into enemy territory to disrupt Axis coordination in mainland Italy. The flight will depart from Laqa and Safi airfields in Malta, moving north across Sicily before following the Italian coast toward the target. Conditions are cloudy with moderate winds and limited visibility, and the area has significant civilian presence, requiring strict accuracy in bomb release procedures. Italian 90mm and 20mm flak batteries are expected, along with German and Italian interceptors scrambling once the formation is detected. The bomber group will climb to thirty thousand feet at seventy percent throttle in standard combat box formation, then convert to Spearhead formation at twenty eight thousand feet as they enter the objective area. Fighter escorts from the Fourteenth Fighter Group will provide cover for the entire duration of the flight. Bombers must positively identify the bunker before any release; abort orders remain valid if the target cannot be safely confirmed. After the strike the formation will exit southwest toward Sicily, regroup, and return to Malta Post drop recordings now available for preliminary effect survey. Civilian casualties were moderate with either Charlie or Delta elements dropping late. Alpha and Bravo elements had good accuracy but a few errant bombs fell wide of target. The citadel was demolished. At least 10 civilian structures also collapsed due to stray bombs. Bomber accuracy and formation discipline will be a key point of order for the week. 10th BG is scheduled again for a 5 Dec raid 2000 EST (6 DEC 0100 UTC). Target location remains classified until pre-departure briefing. Crew 'Burnination' still subject to disciplinary action from reckless flying and needless airframe damage suffered. They are one of the few remaining crews that will not be upgraded into a G model. [link] [comments] |
