The victim is a Maghrebi man with numerous prior convictions who had just stolen a mobile phone and died from strangulation
A 36-year-old Maghrebi man died on Tuesday night in Torrejón de Ardoz after being restrained by two off-duty municipal police officers, following an alleged violent robbery.
The incident took place at the intersection of Pesquera and Calderas streets, where several people called 112 to report a violent robbery committed by two individuals, allegedly of Maghrebi origin, against a man from whom they stole a mobile phone and other personal belongings.
When the National Police and Local Police patrols arrived, one of the alleged perpetrators was being held on the ground by two off-duty municipal officers, aged 58 and 60, one of whom was already retired. The officers were restraining him until backup arrived.
After handcuffing him, the officers noticed that the man was unresponsive and in poor condition. Emergency medical services from SUMMA 112 arrived and attempted to resuscitate him, but could only confirm his death due to strangulation.
The area was cordoned off, and officers from the Forensic Police unit examined the scene. Security camera footage from the area will also be reviewed to clarify what happened. The duty judge ordered both officers involved in the incident to undergo alcohol testing.
