The “You’re only paying for the name” Argument

The “You’re only paying for the name” Argument

I don’t understand why people online (not you guys) keep making the argument that "you're only paying for the name," as though a name has no value. This same argument is nowhere to be seen in the collectors market for signed sports jerseys, musical instruments or posters. Everyone seems to understand that when they buy an autograph they aren't paying for $500 worth of ink and paper.

Even signed artwork has more value than an unsigned painting of the same subject. Names have value in almost every single market, yet when it comes to fashion design suddenly people can't comprehend copyright laws or why brands feel entitled to their own name usage and intellectual property.

If I had impeccable penmanship and started selling forged LeBron James signatures and explaining how mine cost less than an original, I'd get dragged. The entire point of buying a signature is because you want to own a part of something you admire. Not everyone appreciates the same things when it comes to fashion and just like the look, that’s okay too! I just don’t think it should be an issue if others want to buy directly from designers or fashion brands they admire.
