I’ve looked at dozens of list of tools and materials online. I’m pretty sure I have the basics covered, but in almost every tutorial I’ve watched some other amazing gadget or hack or technique involving “this” or “that” gets mentioned.

What are some less conventional tools or materials anyone has on hand and what might I benefit from adding to my toolkit? What might be something very common that a beginner forgets? What are some of the products that are purely gimmick and to avoid wasting money on? Which, if any, of the pictured tools will I find myself replacing often?

I’ve been watching videos of modeling and miniature painting for years and recently been able to take up the hobby myself. I haven’t handled a paintbrush in 35 years and am beyond excited to get started. I’ve gone through my own checklist of supplies but would really appreciate advice from experienced and seasoned modelers.
