A decline in affordable consumer backpacks? - A novice's perspective.
| I know this post might be other than the norm here, but I'd like to share a struggle to find an affordable consumer backpack (here in Australia). As a young lad starting highschool well over a decade ago, I received a Targus Citygear laptop back (right). Aside from being very spacious and having a plethora of pockets and segments, most importantly it was so tough and rugged that it actually survived the frankly stupid level of abuse and travel I put it through all the way through school and for several years after. ... Replacing it was a nightmare. The modern edition of the same model line (left) and seemingly all bags in the normal consumer price range (<$75 USD) all look (and feel) flimsy as hell. A focus on (what I presume is) modern aesthetics and eco-washing and seems to be the new norm. Note the difference in strap and handle design - in the old, a ludicrously strong nylon(?) strap that goes all the way from under the bag to a reinforced stitched section at the top - the handle is built in the same way. The new? simple, weak foam and only the adjustable length section is nylon strap (pardon my complete lack of the right vocabulary). I ended up getting a used replacement almost identical to my old one, and now it's virtually impossible to find any more in good+ condition at reasonable cost. I've had more than a few recommendations for (what I would call) 'premium' brands like Victorinox, and while they look like they should fit the bill, at the equally premium cost they're charging, it just feels like a lot of money to trust to reputation - coming from someone who has been paying <$50 USD ea (in today's money) for two backpacks that lasted for about 20 years between them. So - What's your perspective on this? Have good, durable bags just become the realm of the enthusiast, with premium costs associated? Am I looking for the wrong things and need a few pointers on how to pick a modern durable bag without blowing the bank? Please share your thoughts. [link] [comments] |
