[shady repair] After 6 months and $150, I got my late grandfather’s ol…
| Grandfather gave me a watch of his before he passed away. Absolutely nothing special to anyone except me sentimentally. I’d had it for a while, it was running about +25mins/day but I hadn’t been in a position to drop the cost of a full repair on it until now. Gave it to a local jewelry/watch store in May. I specifically asked for nothing cosmetic to be done, I liked it looking old I just wanted it running better than half an hour fast every day so I could wear it. All I’d done was change the almost completely frayed strap. Got it back today after several reports of difficulty finding parts, not running right, sorry it’s taking so long, etc. Hands were different, I noticed it right away. I asked if the originals were available, guy at the counter said he’d ask. I think I was told the person doing the repairs is the shop owner’s mother, and she works from home. Something told me to look inside too. It’s a different movement. Bulova. Cool, I guess? But for sentimental value I’m really disappointed. Nothing about the hands or movement was communicated to me, ever. Am I being a Karen if I at least try to get the original movement back? I don't even feel like wearing it in its current state. I’d at least like to see if someone, frankly, more talented might be able to fix the original movement. Not sure if it's being persnickety but I could never forget that part of what I got from my grandfather isn't in the watch. [link] [comments] |
