Indigenous population of South America
| Curiosity: Countries like Argentina, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Mexico have a higher proportion of native populations than Brazil. Spanish colonization focused on replacing local leaders and controlling populations, without completely exterminating them, allowing many groups to survive and maintain their physical characteristics until today. In Brazil, Portuguese colonization was different: direct conflicts, diseases, and slavery drastically reduced these populations, and mixing with various peoples,Europeans, Africans, Indigenous, Asians, and Arabs, made these characteristics less visible. That’s why, even with native heritage, Brazilian people look quite different from most of their Latin American neighbors. [link] [comments] |
