Although Japanese occupation didn't officially begin until 1910, per the terms of the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905, Korea was already deprived of its diplomatic sovereignty and obliged to become a protectorate of the Japanese Empire.

The Righteous Armies actually had a history dating back to the 16th century, originally arising during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598.
