In 1941, as a result of six days of German bombing raids, 80% of Minsk's residential buildings were destroyed, the city's central district and railway junction were completely destroyed, and 313 of 330 industrial plants were destroyed. The exact number of human casualties could not be calculated because many residents perished under the rubble of collapsed buildings (construction of bomb shelters was not planned to begin until the fall of 1941). In some parts of the city, the rubble was not cleared until the end of the war. In 1945, the Minsk Regional Commission for the Investigation of Atrocities by the German Occupiers reported that 186 Minsk residents had allegedly died in the bombings, without specifying the period in question. According to the German sanitary service, as of 1 August 1941, between 600 and 700 bodies were still buried under the ruins of the city.
