209 years ago, the French frigate La Méduse ran aground off Mauritania. Of 147 castaways, only 10 survived — a tragedy painted by Géricault between 1818–1819. (1280x874)

Around 400 people (sailors, soldiers, and passengers) were on board La Méduse when it ran aground off the coast of Mauritania in 1816. 147 of them were abandoned on a makeshift raft by the crew.
