This happened to me a few years ago (date is accurate)

My latch was technically fully latched, but I noticed it giving me troubles, being hard to fully latch, for a couple weeks prior.

I was over 2 hours from home, and wound up removing the hood and somehow stuffing it in the back seat; 2008 Subaru Impreza, had to partially remove the center console and move my seat up pretty far.

My hood struts kept it from smacking the windshield. The hood did collide with the corners of the windshield and cracked it pretty bad. I wound up replacing the windshield, the hood hinges, and the latch. Original hood still on the car with battle scars on the corners.
