6 Ways to Start an American City Right from the Highway!

6 Ways to Start an American City Right from the Highway!

As you can see in the 1st Photo, we have our Usual Boring Grid, which we unfortunately tend to make every time we start a New City or Neighborhood. In This Guide I will show you 6 Ways you can Start Your city, and give some tips to Improve it.
1. Classic Grid Remastered: 2nd Photo
- In the 2nd Photo you can see how I have Laid out the Grids. Changing their Orientation again and again adding to the Variation. These Variations should be added carefully as only certain dimensions of Grids allows you to make these kinds of Blocks. I went with 192m long Grid and 6-7 Cell Wide Blocks allowing me to Place 3 Deep Residential or Commercial on either side.
- And to Add Variations to commercials itself, this is where you occasionally add Bigger Buildings at Major Intersections like how I added a Mall and Right opposite to it we have Hospital Complex. Then a few Not too Tall commercials or Offices to add Variation Height wise.
- And Last but not the Least, Having some Variations in your Overall Layout also gives a Fresh Look to it. For Example in the same 2nd Photo you can see I Curved the Collector at an Angle and then Continued my Grid that way. Then Later, connected them both with the Hybrid Layout Technique, where you connect Roads with Curves like Organic Layout, but the Blocks itself are Parallel, hence acting as Grids.
- (I have a District Planning Series on my Channel.)

  1. Small Town Start: 3rd Photo
    - This Applies the same Principles of Grid Remastered in terms of Layouts and Grid/Blocks. But the place where it differs is the Density of Commercials and Offices on Collector.
    - To make it more like a Small Town Layout, you can make the Grids Smaller and Thinner which will house 2 Deep Housing and Commercials.
    - One thing you may have noticed, this grid doesn't has Neighborhood Main Road. In Small Towns I think it really doesn't matter that much, but this is something that Totally Depends on How Packed the Residential is causing Traffic Problems.

  2. Organic Start: 4th Photo
    - If you are sick of Grids or Hybrid Layouts, Organic Start is also a good Option. Usually there is a Curvy or winding Collector that comes out of the Interchange and from it you have other Winding Roads that make up for a Organic Layout. Sometimes you can also see irregular Grids and Hybrid Layout form out of this Layout, and I think it definitely comes in Organic Start.
    - mainly seen in Pure Neighborhoods with no Commercials nearby, but, you can still have Commercials to an Extent closer to the interchange or around major intersections. But most of the Time you will see this Type of Start only be used when you are adding Extra Connections to a Neighborhood via Highway OR, it’s a Rich Neighborhood with Abundance of greenery and a very close access to the highway.
    - There is no Good way of making the Layout, just make sure that the Blocks you are making it can house either 2, 3 or sometimes 4 Deep Housing. There will be times when you will have Some Big Blocks or weird shapes that cannot be filled properly. Those Areas will become Parks or place to have Trees there.

  3. Scenic Parkway: 5th Photo
    - This is not something that is any Different than any of the Starts you have just Learned about. The main key difference for these is the preference for the Tree Lined Roads whether it be Collector or Neighborhood Main Road. Usually the commercials that are present on the collector or neighborhood main road, all are either restaurants or cafes. and then in some of remaining spaces you have parks and then lies the residential area in rest part of the layout.
    - This can be incorporated with any of the 3 Starts we have looked before, whether it be related to Layouts or placement of the commercials.
    - This City start is also followed by some focus on creating Parks and Trails and some landscape work to really make the Layout Shine.

  4. Mixed Start: 6th Photo
    - Here Commercials/offices are limited to near the Highway, making them highway side commercials. These house Big commercials and office buildings and sometimes some Industrial Warehouses. After a thin line of them, you have the entire place reserved for residential.
    - They make sure all the heavy traffic and noise pollution stays much closer to the highway and not in the residential area.
    - Because of Having bigger Commercials, they house more of Big Companies like Target, IKEA, H-E-B, etc.
    - The best part about this start is that it Easily blends with All the Starts you have looked before this.

  5. Industrial Start: 7th Photo
    - This start is Brutal and Bold. It is only possible if you are making a Small Farming Town or at least Starting it small and then later on transitioning to a proper Town/City.
    - The most Advantageous part about this start is the ability to start industry so early on with a proper layout which will boost your early game earnings by quite a lot.
    - The places where you can see the Fields are the Farms, and rest of the Open space is for Residential and Commercial.

So these were all the 6 Starts that you can do, Feel free to ask any Questions Down in comments.
I also have a Whole District Planning Series on the Channel too. :)

Happy Building!
