We built a nearly 1:1 city of Colombo!
| Hello, everyone! I'd like to share something we've been working on recently: a reasonably accurate topographical representation of the city of Colombo in Sri Lanka, built with land use and transport data based on official city development plans centered around 2020. So far we have 1,044,500 virtual citizens (it's modded to the hilt, of course), with the Colombo Municipal Council area modelled and population centers along extended corridors to simulate day and night commuter influx. We're about 100m and a few thousand citizens shorter than the real city. We built it largely for journalism purposes, but people seem to be intrigued by it, so I'm sharing it here. So far most of the interest has been from universities (especially the Transport and Town and Country Planning depts) for teaching students, as well as a few inquiries here and there from urban planners who want to prototype ideas. If anyone's interested, we've put the whole thing up on Github, with a wiki outlining methodology and the works! https://github.com/team-watchdog/colombo-skylines If you want to do something similar or are curious about the full methodology, have a look at the wiki! https://github.com/team-watchdog/colombo-skylines/wiki/Introduction-and-methodology (Tested on Windows 11 and Pop OS 22.04 LTS. To make it easier to install, we've uploaded the full folder structure, including mod configs.) [link] [comments] |
