Can a planted tank be cycled in a few days? - Seeking advice for 10yo new aquarist

10 year old began setting up a planted tank a couple of days ago for, eventually, some neocaridina shrimp (he wanted squids but is settling for shrimp ????). So he did the following:

  • Add Fluval Stratum to the bottom of 5.5 gallon tank
  • Bury a few tabs of Aquarium Co-op Easy Green tabs in the Stratum
  • Add a strip of Bio-Activ Gravel lengthwise across the Stratum
  • Cap everything with rinsed out sand and add a spoonful of crushed coral
  • Add random rocks and spiderwood
  • Dip aquarium plants (water wisteria, echinodorus pink miracle, java fern, anubias golden nana, anubias nana petite, dwarf hairgrass) in bleach mixture then soak in dechlorinated water for one day (he’s terrified of diseases and parasitic hitchhikers)
  • Dip Taiwan and Xmas mosses in hydrogen peroxide mixture then soak in dechlorinated water for one day
  • Add plants to tank and to rocks/spiderwood using cyanoacrylate super glue
  • Fill bucket with tap water and add Seachem’s Prime and Stability, and Aquarium Co-op’s Easy Green liquid fertilizer. Then use bucket to fill up tank
  • Add sponge filter, thermometer, and heater (set to 72)
  • Add Aqueon clip on light. Timer turns it on for 6 hrs a day. Otherwise it’s pretty dark
  • Leave tank alone. Tested water on day 3 (unfortunately didn’t have strips on day 1)
  • Day 3 test results: Ph 7.6 (tap water tested at 8.2); Ammonia 0 ppm; Nitrite 0 ppm; Nitrate 5ppm.

He wants to know if this mean his tank is already cycled (“sigma!”). Is that even possible? Regardless, he’s determined to wait at least 6 weeks to allow the plants time to adapt and propagate, and time to earn as many as possible shrimp as possible. But he’s confused as to what the test results mean and whether he’s missing a step at this stage in prepping for the eventual addition of neocaridina shrimp. He’s going back to his LFS next weekend but is hoping for some Reddit guidance in the meantime. Ty!
